Frances Fukuyama: We Have Reached the End of History

Abstract

Mr. Fukuyama, who is Deputy Director for East—West Political—Military Affairs in the U.S. State Department, proposed that history is the story of competing ideologies, and now that there is a winner—namely, western economic and political liberalism—the story is complete. In other words, the world has reached the end of history; that is, “the end point of mankind's ideological evolution and the universalization of western liberal democracy as the final form of human government.” Mr. Fukuyama received his PhD in Government from Harvard University in 1981. He has been an analyst at the RAND Corporation think-tank and served on the U.S. delegation to the Egyptian—Israeli talks on Palestinian autonomy.
