Don Nelson: Holistic Resource Management

Keywords

Abstract

Dr. Don Nelson, a beef specialist in the Faculty of Animal Sciences at Washington State University, recently directed a $2.7 million project on integrated farming systems funded in part by the Kellogg Foundation. Through this project, Don pioneered some of the first university-based research and development on holistic resource management in agriculture. In his work Don integrates resource management with personal development, financial management, and community development. This is a tall order by anyone's standards. At the time of the interview, the project was just coming to the end of its four-year life span. Part of the project involved an educational/training component for agriculturists covering decision-making processes, goal setting, biological planning and monitoring, land planning, financial wealth generation, and policy analysis.
